It's a new year and a great time to reflect upon the last twelve months of your business. Like many business owners, Christmas can be a difficult period as you...
It’s never easy to find the right balance of family and business when you’re a business owner or entrepreneur.
You have a responsibility to ensure that your business performs as highly as it should. And as we all know, there are times when we need to make sacrifices; burn the candle at both ends and give up some of our free time to make our venture work. This is especially true when you’re just getting your business off the ground.
It’s easy to get sucked into the trap of putting work first, not seeing as much of your kids or family as you’d like and missing many of their milestones.
Trying to balance your family and business is always going to be difficult, increasing your stress levels and causing you to underperform both at work and at home.
Follow the tips we share below and you’ll find it much easier to juggle your responsibilities, take care of your loved ones and drive your business forward towards success.
Get a dedicated office space
Instead of fighting to find space on the kitchen table or needing to deal with constant distractions, it’s well worth renting an office or co-working space.
This will also help add separation between your work and home life and make it much easier to switch off once you leave the office.
You’ll also find that having a designated space purely for work will help you become more focused and productive once you are there, freeing up more of your time to spend with your family.
Leave your work in the office
Although it’s often easier said than done, you should avoid bringing work stress into your home for the sake of your family.
When it’s time to finish for the day, shut down your computer, close the door, and step away from work. If you can, take ten minutes or so to get mental space from the events of the day so your family can enjoy the happiest, most present version of you.
Get it in your diary
Family time should be just as non-negotiable as that important business meeting or that big project you’re juggling. Yet often, it slides down the list of priorities when you’re under so much pressure and have deadlines looming.
The best way to ensure you spend time with your loved one is to schedule it as a regular part of your day. Block out time in your diary if you need to. But make sure you give your undivided attention time to your kids and partner as often as you can, even if it’s just for 30 minutes at the end of the day.
This will also give you more time to relax and unwind so you feel refreshed, more focused and better able to concentrate on your business.
Turn your phone off
Turn off your notifications, don’t accept work phone calls and keep your phone out of arm's reach when you’re with your family. This helps you give them the attention they deserve whilst also stopping work stress interfering with the rest of your life.
Your family will value the fact that you’re fully present, and you’ll also model sensible behaviour when it comes to your tech habits so your family can do the same.
It’s not easy to balance the needs of your family and your job. But by developing a certain separation between work and home life, being more present both at work and at home, blocking out time for family and leaving your work in the office, it will be much less stressful and much more rewarding.
